GDIS2

Date Completed : June '09 (Still An On Going Project @ RNI)
Project Timeline : ~10 Months from September '08 to July'09
Project Type : Work Related, Job

Downloads :
  GDIS2_Manual.zip  ( ~ 5.91 MB)

Project Details :
Here is the last version of the Manual I worked on for RNI. This doc covers all the basics for installation, setup, and running of the GDIS2 mod. Overall with the improvements and updates to the document, it felt like I did it from scratch. I had to rewrite almost all of the information in the document. I also had to update virtually every image as well. It was a lot of work.

The updates originated from a recent demo RNI did. There were some new features and updates to a lot of the old features. The client asked us to give them an updated document. So my job was to take the 6 different versions of all our documentation and merge it into a single doc. It was a little tedious sorting all of the information from the various docs. There was a lot of information in the docs that was outdated, but there were sections in some that were more recent. This caused me to browse over all the information and sort everything. From there I educated myself were necessary in certain areas of the mod. I then wrote a comprehensive Manual to explain everything.

Unfortunately this was one of the last projects I worked on while at RNI. I didn't receive a lot of feedback, but what I did get back was very positive. Everyone that had been able to review any of the new Manual really liked the improvements and the detail. This was very exciting for me, as it was a large revision. I was pressed for time to complete the doc for a follow meeting. I had basically 4 days (well maybe 5) to redo the entire doc. I know I had to clock a little bit of overtime to get it finished. But the end results were very good and everyone liked the new version.

Project Details :
This project was to develop a game and the tools to develop it. This included the game engine, a tile engine, a world editor, and the documentation. The project as a whole has yet to be completed. What we have completed so far is as much as we were able to complete in a few months. The documentation is along the same line. It has a lot of information and the majority of the sections are completed. But there are a couple main sections that still need to be completed.

The story and the dialog are the 2 main parts left. The dialog is left because the story is incomplete. The story has 5 main Archs in it. For our project we were only required to complete the first Arch. So the first Arch in the game is more or less completed. The dialog for this section is there, but probably not fully completed. There are parts of the first Arch that will need more dialog, and sub dialog. Overall the game and design we wanted was pretty large. This is really a good thing as we were making a full fledged game. With a short timeframe, and only 2 members, this was a little more then we could finish.

Overall the best way to explain the document and the information is to read over it. I have tried to explain all of the various parts of the game in the doc. The one drawback currently is that the documentation is still in a high level mindset. So I'm not sure just anyone could read the entire doc and have a solid idea of everything we had going on. Eventually if the project picks up again, the documentation will be simplified so it is easier to read.

Antz has a couple documents. The first is an excel sheet. This document covers all of the stats for the units in the mod. It also covers most of the game mechanics. This includes the formulas for damage, damage reduction, hit miss, and defensive stats. The accompanying doc is the game design doc. This game doc is fairly straight forward. It covers all of the basics about the game. It goes into detail on each of the units and their abilities. Overall it is pretty good, but not quiet as detailed as say my Genetics Documentation.

It's not as in depth as some of my other docs though.

These are mainly for my use. But they are a game bible sectioned off into separate files rather than one big file. They cover all parts of a game and the design. I haven't had a need to use these specifically in a final version, but they have helped me work on docs in production. Some of the information listed in these docs can help you really plan out a project. These docs are updated occasionally when I find new information or ideas for the sections.
